Practical Haybox Usage

I have designed our haybox in 2019. Over time I streamlined the use of our haybox. This page documents the current (2025) way we use the haybox.

First put rice and salted water to a boil. Take one part rice to two parts water. Put on the lid and let it boil for about half a minute.

Put the pan in the haybox.

Our haybox is at the bottom a thick woolen mat. On top of the mat is a felted sheepskin. These two pieces are a standard fixture in our living room. They provide excellent insulation from the floor and are very nice to sit on.

On top of the sheepskin I put a pink fleece blanket. On top of the blanket is a piece of cardboard for extra insulation and to ensure the blanket stays clean.

I then fold the cardboard over the pan. And then fold the fleece blanket over the top. First left to right, then right to left and finally I tuck top and bottom ends into the cavity made by the cardboard.

Finally I cover the fleece again with a smaller felted sheepskin. It is now well camouflaged!

After about 20-30 minutes the rice will be sufficiently cooked. In this case, I took out the rice after 1.5 hours. It was hot and delicious.
