Zones in permaculture is a concept for roughly categorizing areas according to ease and/or frequency of access.
| 00: | Your own body. |
|---|---|
| 0: | The base of operations under consideration. |
| 1: | Offers easy, quick access but not as immediate as zone 0. |
| 2: | Somewhat more involved access. Still regularly visited. |
| 3: | Even further away. Regular visits become scarcer. |
| 4: | Visited only a few times a year. |
| 5: | Wild, untamed wilderness - rarely, if ever visited. |
A typical example is a design for a house and surrounding areas. In this case, the zones would roughly map to the following areas:
| 00: | Your own body (in the house). |
|---|---|
| 0: | The house. |
| 1: | The front yard and the back yard. |
| 2: | The shed in the backyard. |
| 3: | The neighborhood. |
| 4: | The rest of town. |
| 5: | Beyond city limits. |
However, changing to the context of designing a shed in the backyard for this same house. The zones could roughly map to the following areas:
| 00: | Your own body (in the shed). |
|---|---|
| 0: | The shed. |
| 1: | The back yard. |
| 2: | The house. |
| 3: | The front yard and the neighborhood. |
| 4: | The rest of town. |
| 5: | Beyond city limits. |
